Odds stacked against Mervue in final group game

Mervue United take on Cockhill Celtic this weekend in their final group game of this FAI National League campaign.

The game was supposed to take place on October 24, but was postponed due to weather conditions. Since then, Mervue United's hopes of making the semi-finals have been dashed by results elsewhere.

After Lucan United's 2-0 victory over Home Farm DCU, they are now in the driving seat to the top Group 1 and progress to the semi-finals. If they beat Bonagee United on Saturday, they finish top and Home Farm DCU drop into second. Home Farm DCU's far superior goal difference means Mervue would have to beat Cockhill Celtic by 10 goals to finish above them.

If Lucan lose, Mervue need to win and hope that the results from the other groups go their way. It's improbable but not impossible. All O'Connor's side can do is handle their own business and control what they can control.

Cockhill Celtic sit rock bottom of Group 1, with just one point to their name. That point came against Mervue on the opening weekend of the National League season.

While Mervue have progressed since that encounter, the Donegal side have regressed. They have lost five games and drew once, last weekend against Bonagee United. They have shipped 18 goals while only scoring six.

Kick-off is 2pm this Saturday in the Charlie O'Donnell Sports Ground.
