Drivers across Galway city are being warned to expect significant traffic disruption over the coming months as major water infrastructure works are carried out in the east of the city.
Galway City East Councillor Shane Forde has urged motorists to prepare for disruption linked to a programme of works by Uisce Éireann, which will take place at several locations from September and continue through the remainder of 2026.
The first major project will focus on the Murrough area. The network upgrade is due to begin next month and will involve replacing approximately 1.3 kilometres of water mains between Ballyloughane Road and Murrough Drive, near Galway Crystal.
The works are expected to continue until Christmas and are likely to affect local residents, commuters and those travelling to nearby schools.
Councillor Forde said the project would cause “significant disruption” for people living in the area and those travelling to work or school. However, he stressed that the upgrades are essential and encouraged motorists to plan ahead and allow additional time for their journeys.
A second major project is also scheduled to begin in October, when work gets underway on the Ballybane Pumping Station upgrade.
The projects form part of Uisce Éireann’s ongoing investment in Galway’s water infrastructure, with the aim of improving the reliability and capacity of the network.
Motorists travelling through the east of the city are being advised to remain aware of temporary traffic measures and possible delays as the works progress.
