Tai Chi: a simple solution to anxiety

Listed by Forbes magazine as the exercise of the 21st century with the greatest all-round benefits for the human body, Tai Chi, often referred to as “meditation in motion,” is a mind-body practice combining slow, spiral rotational movements with deep breathing and mindfulness. Originating as a martial art in China 400 years ago, Tai Chi has evolved into one of the world's most popular exercises for promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

The science behind Tai Chi and anxiety relief

With the increasing negative effects of overstimulation on the brain due to technology being evident more and more, Tai Chi provides real hope for recovering calm and balance, resetting the nervous system and bringing anxiety under control.

1. Stress hormone regulation: Research shows that Tai Chi can reduce levels of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Lower cortisol levels are associated with reduced anxiety and improved mood stability.

2. Improved heart rate variability (HRV ): Studies show Tai Chi enhances HRV, a key marker of the body’s ability to manage stress. Higher HRV is linked to better emotional regulation and resilience against anxiety.

3. Neuroplasticity and anxiety: Tai Chi practices encourage neuroplasticity - the brain's ability to form new neural connections. This adaptation promotes better coping mechanisms and reduces the intensity of anxious thoughts.

4. Enhanced GABA activity: Tai Chi increases gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA ) activity in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that

helps calm the nervous system, reducing feelings of anxiety.

5. Reduction in inflammation: Chronic stress and anxiety often lead to inflammation, which can exacerbate mental health symptoms. Tai Chi lowers inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP ), contributing to improved mental wellbeing.

Research supporting Tai Chi for anxiety

Harvard Medical School, among many other research institutes, has found that Tai Chi significantly reduces symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress while improving overall quality of life. Thousands of studies are available on PubMed listing 93 illnesses and conditions that Tai Chi helps prevent or improve symptoms and root causes. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, type 2 diabetes, fall prevention, mental health, cardiovasular conditions, stroke recovery, CPD, stiffness and pain, poor sleep and digestion problems are a few of these.

Galway is home to the leading Tai Chi school in Europe directed by Chen Tai Chi Ireland founder Niall O Floinn in the lineage of the coach of the most national champions of China, Wang Hai Jun, for the past 24 years. You can find his interviews by Ray Darcy and Clare McKenna as well as Nationwide on the website www.chentaichi.ie, where you can also find out more.

The self defence aspects of Tai Chi are developed only after the health building foundation is laid, which anyone can access regardless of age or fitness, providing safe fitness and strength recovery.
