Galway native Alex Murphy has joined 2.Bundesliga side FC Kaiserslautern on loan from Newcastle United for the 2026/27 season.
The Irish defender moves to the second-tier German outfit in search of regular playing time. Murphy was a constant feature in Newcastle's matchday squads in the Premier League last season but found minutes hard to come by.
"I’m very happy to be here," Murphy told club media.
"Kaiserslautern is a great club and I can’t wait to play my first game in this incredible stadium. I want to take the next steps in my development here and be as successful as possible with the team this season."
This feels like the right time for the 22-year-old to take the next step in his career. Last season, although frustrating, came with a number of milestones for the man who hails from Annaghdown.
Murphy made his full debut for Newcastle United in their Champions League last 16 tie against Qarabag. He played the full 90 minutes at left-back in a 3-2 victory at St James' Park.
With consistent minutes in the Irish under-21 squad throughout the campaign, Murphy was rewarded with a senior call up from Heimer Hallgrimsson in May for friendly games against Qatar and Canada. Despite not featuring, the experience and recognition stand him in good stead going into the upcoming season.
“Alex has already proven at his previous clubs that, despite his young age, he possesses a high level of quality and is therefore capable of taking on responsibility on the pitch. His strengths include his positional flexibility and his control of the game, which also fits our aggressive style of play off the ball.
“We are delighted to have signed another talented player who fits our squad planning perfectly,” FC Kaiserslautern’s sporting director Marcel Klos said.
Kaiserslautern are four-times champions of Germany, but have spent the last 14 seasons in the second and third divisions.
Murphy will wear the number three shirt during his stint in Germany.
