Aaron Niland is Galway’s top scorer in this year’s championship going into Sunday’s All-Ireland decider.

In his debut year, Niland has been a revelation for the Tribesmen, particularly from dead balls. The Clarinbridge man will need to maintain his nerveless sharpshooting if his side are to bring Liam MacCarthy home.

The 20-year-old has shot 1-33 in the championship to-date to put him at the top of Galway’s scoring charts. Of that tally, 0-26 have been from frees with his sole goal being the penalty he converted against Dublin in the Leinster final at Croke Park.

Niland scored 1-8 in that final as Galway clinched a first Bob O’Keefe Cup since 2018. It was a coming-of-age performance for the forward in what has been a spectacular breakthrough campaign.

The Clarinbridge forward scored 0-8 (0-6f ) in Galway’s Round 1 dismantling of Kilkenny before going on to shoot 0-9 (0-7f ) against Offaly in Round 2. A further 0-5 (0-4f ) notched up against Dublin in the Round 4 defeat was followed up with his 1-8 display in the Leinster showcase.

Niland enjoyed a quieter day in front of the posts against Cork in the semi-final as he put away a modest 0-3 by his standards, all from frees.

Niland’s transition from underage hurling to senior has been seamless. He still formed an integral part of the U20 team that made it to the All-Ireland final but ultimately lost to Clare. He also nursed an ankle injury throughout his debut campaign.

Galway’s sharpshooting ace will have to be at his ruthless best against Limerick. His efficiency from dead balls could prove a decisive factor in this weekend’s final.
