Nearly five years after the project began, the Clifden flood relief scheme still has not moved past the first of five planned stages.

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West John Connolly confirmed that Galway County Council and the Office of Public Works are reviewing proposals for a flood relief scheme that would help protect around 24 properties in Clifden.

A final report examining the available options has now been completed, and further meetings are due to take place shortly to decide on the preferred solution and move the project towards the planning stage.

Clifden has faced a number of extreme flooding events in the last five years that caused significant damage to property and infrastructure.

Minister Connolly welcomed the confirmation of a final report but called for the project to be accelerated after years of delays.

“The people of Clifden have waited long enough. It is now time to move from reports and reviews to delivery.”
