Galway County Council has launched a new fire safety awareness campaign to help improve safety for people living in caravans and mobile homes on halting sites across the county.

The campaign, led by the Council’s Traveller Accommodation Unit and supported through the Dormant Accounts Fund, centres on a newly commissioned fire safety video that focuses on prevention, awareness and how to respond in an emergency.

The video was produced in partnership with Galway Fire Services, Traveller representative groups, Colas and the local authority’s Traveller Accommodation Unit. It outlines the particular fire risks linked with caravans and mobile homes and offers practical guidance on how residents can stay safe and act quickly if a fire breaks out.

Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council, said increasing fire safety awareness among residents of halting sites has been identified as a priority for Galway County Council.

“This initiative is about providing practical information that can help keep people safe and reduce the risk of fire-related incidents. By sharing the video across our social media channels and through our community partners, we hope to ensure this important safety message reaches as many people as possible.”

Uinsinn Finn, Director of Services with responsibility for Fire and Emergency Services, said that caravans and mobile homes present unique challenges in the event of a fire, particularly because fires can spread very quickly and escape routes may be limited.

“This video provides practical, easy-to-follow advice that can help people prevent fires and respond safely if one occurs. We are pleased to work with our partners on this important initiative.”

Damien Mitchell, Director of Services with responsibility for Housing at Galway County Council, said the Housing Section works closely with Traveller families, representative groups and Galway Fire Service to support safe and sustainable living environments across our halting sites. “This campaign is a good example of that partnership in action, bringing together local knowledge and fire safety expertise to deliver a practical resource that can help protect residents and reduce the risk of fire-related incidents. We are grateful to everyone involved in developing and supporting this important initiative.”
