Four University of Galway rowers have been selected in the Ireland squad for the upcoming Rowing World Cup 2026 in Seville.
Maigh Cuilinn’s Fiona Murtagh will lead Ireland in the Women’s Single Sculls. Emma Fagan is the Women’s Four, Martin O’Grady is in the Men’s Quad Scull, and Fionán Tolan competes in the Men’s Pair.
The World Cup starts on May 29 and marks the first senior international test of the season for many of Ireland’s High Performance athletes as crews continue preparations towards a busy summer racing programme. The selection for the University of Galway rowers follows an extensive winter training and trial process at the National Rowing Centre, with athletes and crews working through months of preparation, testing, and racing to earn selection for the Irish team.
“World Cup I is an important milestone for our programme and provides an excellent opportunity for athletes and crews to benchmark themselves internationally early in the season,” said Niall O’Carroll, High Performance Director at Rowing Ireland.
“A huge amount of work has gone in behind the scenes over the winter months, from daily training sessions and camps through to a demanding trial process at the National Rowing Centre. Selection for these crews has been highly competitive, and the athletes have earned the opportunity to race in Seville through their performances and commitment across the season to date,” added O’Carroll.
The four rowers from University of Galway will join a 17-strong Irish team to Spain with racing expected to feature many of the world’s leading rowing nations as crews begin their international campaigns for the season.
The 2026 World Rowing Cup I takes place from May 29-31.
