Spending a penny in Garda van cost €200

A man who urinated in the back of a Garda van while drunk was charged with the clean-up cost of €180 when his case came before Galway District Court.

Mark Fulton (no fixed address ) apologised to Gardaí and the court for his behaviour on the night.

Judge Fiona Brennan was told the defendant was drunk and making a nuisance of himself at Eyre Square at 6.50pm on March 22 last.

Gardaí were called to the scene where an ambulance crew had already arrived. The defendant began shouting and acting aggressively towards them and was arrested under the Public Order Act.

While being transported to Garda HQ he urinated in the back of the Garda van. As a result the van had to be taken out of service for the night and the clean-up cost was €180.

The defendant told the court he was working on a scheme and wanted to apologise for his behaviour.

Judge Brennan imposed a fine of €100 for criminal damage to the Garda van and another €100 for a breach of the peace.
