Galway United Women entertain Sligo Rovers in the Connacht Derby on Saturday at 5pm after a winning start to the season last week in the Belfield Bowl.
It won’t go down in the annals as a vintage display from a team that often produces good football. Their pressure eventually paid off when Isabella Beletic headed home from Aoibheann Costello’s corner in the 74th minute.
Summer Lawless had been keeping United at bay until that point, making a particularly good save from the lively Niamh Farrelly.
Manager Phil Trill was pleased with the performance. Three full debutants impressed. Amanda McQuillan did not have a lot to do but was a reassuring presence. Remini Tilloston showed quality on the ball and Cara Griffin impressed too.
The quality that was introduced off the bench was also impressive. Lynsey McKey, Aoibhín Donnelly, Eve Dossen and Anna McGough were all valuable introductions off the bench. There are therefore plenty of positive selection dilemmas for Trill and his staff.
They might well need 16 against Sligo. The Bit O’Red have always raised their game against United even when they lay lowly in the league.
They will be buoyed by a magnificent point in their first outing against Athlone Town. They are also more of an unknown quantity this season. Four new signings from America started last Saturday and have seemed to have had an immediate impact. Paula McGrory finished the season strongly last year and will need to be watched. Captain Emma Hansberry scored last week and will be an influential figure as always.
It sets up the most intriguing Connacht Derby since United’s entry into the women’s game. There have been some great games over the last couple of years, but this may carry a greater significance despite being the second game of the season.
A good Galway crowd could help United to get over the line. Punters are unlikely to be disappointed with the fare on offer.
