Galway United travelled to Tolka Park last week in hope rather than expectation. The performance and the result look to have ignited their campaign.
The signing of a talented and proven striker in Frantz Pierrot has further infused belief. Francely Lomboto and Stephen Walsh had both impressed in their first outings, but it was clear that the load would need to be shared.
Signing number 13 for the 2026 campaign, Pierrot's resumé stands apart. He impressed in Athlone but also proved himself at the top level with Drogheda United. His craft and pace could add a new dimension to his new side.
Kris Twardek's performance off the bench in Drumcondra did not go unnoticed either. United fans might have remembered a silky, languid style from his days in Dalymount Park. However, his power was evident on Friday as he put United ahead briefly. Another newcomer, Connor Barratt showed poise and ability on the ball upon his introduction.
United functioned well as a unit. John Caulfield had hinted that the fortnight of preparation might have helped a squad with so many new faces.
It was notable that they lined up in the same way as against Drogheda United on the opening night. It was heartening to see a continuation of many of the positive signs, summed up by a beautiful combination between Wasiri Williams, Jimmy Keohane and David Hurley in the build-up to the goal. The performances of Arthur Parker, Lee Devitt and Aaron Bolger should not go without mention either.
United's penalty concession so soon after the opener shows that the team still has plenty of improving to do. They are unlikely to be able to afford any such slip-ups in tomorrow night’s Connacht Derby.
The importance of this game to both teams is apparent. Their poor record in the fixture last season was a large factor in Galway United’s problems late on. There were a couple of chastening defeats at home.
Early running suggests that the sides will be keeping close tabs on one another again this year. John Russell’s side got off the mark with a creditable draw down in Waterford.
They too were boosted this week with the return of James McManus to the club. He is likely to link up well with former Bohs colleague Archie Meekison. Jad Hakiki is another one to watch, however the talented Irish underage international only started from the bench in the RSC.
It may have been cause for some concern leading into the season, but it does look like United will have some positive selection conundrums of their own. Twardek and Barratt look like they’re at the level. Matty Wolfe and Ed McCarthy were good options off the bench in Dublin and will continue to press their cases for inclusion. Pierrot and Al-Amin Kazeem will strengthen the squad in time but tomorrow might be too soon for both.
The timing would be just right for United to get one over on their Connacht counterparts in their 100th meeting. It is a fixture that has answered the question about its merits as a derby in the last couple of seasons.
United will hope to answer some more questions themselves tomorrow.
