Bestselling and award-winning Irish author Mary Costello will be at Kennys Bookshop for an event on Tuesday, March 3, when she will be joined in conversation by Sarah Kenny about her new novel, A Beautiful Loan, officially published the following week. Mary Costello is the author of two short story collections and two novels. Her first novel, Academy Street, won Irish Novel of the Year at the Irish Book Awards and was named overall Irish Book of the Year in 2014. It was shortlisted for the International Literary Award, the Costa First Novel Prize and the EU Prize for Literature, among others, and has been translated into many languages. Her first short story collection, The China Factory was nominated for the Guardian First Book Award and her second short story collection, Barcelona was an Irish Times Bestseller. She lives in Galway.
Her new novel, A Beautiful Loan, follows 19-year-old Anna after she moves to Dublin in 1985 and becomes enthralled by Peter Gallagher, an older, worldly man. Her obsessive longing for him leads to marriage and, eventually, a crushing betrayal. Her journey gives an intimate portrait of a woman embracing herself as she is, and claiming the life she yearns for.
