Sinn Féin TD for Galway East, Louis O’Hara, has said that the ESB have committed to carrying out a number of improvement works immediately to address the ongoing power outages affecting areas like Dunmore, Glenamaddy, Clonbern and surrounding areas in North East Galway.

O’Hara was speaking after meeting with the ESB today in relation to the ongoing outages.

“I met with the ESB regarding the ongoing power outages in North East Galway, affecting areas like Dunmore, Glenamaddy, Clonbern and surrounding areas.

“I made clear to them that the number of outages in the local area has been unacceptable, some areas have had up to 20 outages in the past year.

“The ESB have committed to carry out a number of immediate works to address the ongoing outages.

“There will be upgrades to the protections and equipment at the Ballygar station which feeds all of the affected areas; improved automation for quicker fault identification, faster restoration, and to reduce the number of people who lose power when outages occur; alternative backfeeds into each area to reduce the risk of power outages; and they will step up efforts in terms of forestry, timber cutting and line maintenance

“In the medium term there are plans to double the capacity of Ballygar station and a new line linking Cloon with Glenamaddy stations to improve resilience.

“They have assured me that this will result in significant improvements in the short term in the local area.

“I will hold them to these commitments and will be in regular contact to ensure this work is progressing,” he concluded.
