Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton has approved an initial seven new special classes for schools in Galway. This is the first round of approvals, which will take place over the coming weeks.

“I am pleased to announce this first round of approvals of new special classes for schools in Galway. Ensuring that children with special educational needs receive an education is a priority for this government. It is also a key priority for me as Education and Youth and for my Department”, the Minister said.

“The vast majority of children with special educational needs are supported to attend mainstream classes with their peers. Where children with more complex needs require additional supports, special classes are provided,” the Minister continued.

The Primary schools in Galway approved in this round are Creagh National School in Ballinasloe, Scoil Mhic Dara in Carraroe, St Nicholas’ Primary School in Galway City, and Cummer National School in Tuam.

The Post-Primary schools in Galway approved in this round are Dominican College and Coláiste na Coiribe in Galway City, and Clarin College in Athenry.

“Budget 2025 provides funding for another 400 special classes and 300 special school places nationwide, and it is estimated that a similar level of provision will be needed each year for the next three years. I will be making further announcements over the coming weeks in relation to additional classes,” the Minister concluded.
