During recent canvassing efforts in Renmore, Labour Party candidate Helen Ogbu engaged with residents who expressed growing concerns about traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure in their neighbourhood.

Residents highlighted the traffic bottleneck near the bus stop on Renmore Road, adjacent to Duggan’s Pharmacy, as a significant issue during rush hours. Many attributed the congestion to cars parking on the roadside near the bus stop, obstructing the flow of traffic. To address this, residents have called for the installation of clear ‘bus stop’ signage on the road to prevent drivers from parking in the bus lane.

Moreover, residents are advocating for adjustments to the timing of traffic lights to allow more cars through before turning red, particularly for vehicles turning right towards ATU. At present, residents report only a few cars being able to pass through the intersection, exacerbating congestion.

Concerns extend beyond traffic management to include the need for safe and functional cycle lanes. Families with young children are eager for improvements that would enable safer school commutes and reduce reliance on car transportation. Residents emphasize the importance of segregated lanes to protect cyclists from traffic hazards and ensure their safety.

Additionally, residents are calling for urgent improvements and resurfacing of footpaths, particularly in areas like Sycamore Court, Beechpark, Dun Na Mara Drive, and Yewland Green. Many elderly residents have expressed safety concerns due to treacherous footpaths, with some reporting falls. Improving pedestrian infrastructure is vital to ensure the safety and mobility of all residents.

Furthermore, the long-awaited playground promised for years remains undelivered, leaving young families disillusioned. Residents are demanding decisive action and proper consultation to determine the best location for this essential amenity.

Helen Ogbu, the Labour Party candidate for Galway City East in the upcoming Local Elections on June 7, has pledged to prioritize the needs of the community and advocate for the necessary improvements. Ogbu assures residents that she will be a hands-on representative, committed to being a strong voice for Galway City East.
