Ability West last week hosted the official opening of the All-inclusive Community Remembrance Picnic Area in Terryland Forest Park, Sandyvale officiated by Deputy Mayor Donal Lyons.

The picnic area has been developed as a remembrance area which consists of two wheelchair accessible picnic tables and a bench on a smooth surface. An engraved stone is close by with the words "In memory of those who have touched our lives and remain forever in our hearts."

The concept was proposed by people supported by Ability West who lost loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic and were unable to pay their respects in the traditional fashion.

The project is a collaboration between Ability West, Galway City Local Community Development Committee and Galway City Council.

Located in Terryland Forest Park close to the heart of the city, it is one of the most cherished areas of biodiversity in the country making it an ideal tranquil place for visitors to rest, unwind and become immersed in nature.

Speeches were made by Deputy Mayor Donal Lyons, Audrey Pidgeon, CEO of Ability West, Brendan Smith, campaigner for the positive development of Terryland Forest Park and John Howard, Advocacy Facilitator at Ability West, reflecting on how the All-inclusive Community Remembrance Picnic Area will have a positive impact on the community, fostering a sense of inclusivity, unity and connection.

Well over one hundred people were in attendance including members of Ability West, Galway City Council, Recreations and Amenity staff of GCC, Access for All, residents from Sandyvale, community activists and Tuaha volunteers.

The opening of this picnic area is an important milestone in promoting a vision for Galway to become a leader in universal design, community participation and an all-inclusive society.
