Countdown commencing for Athlone Shannon Feastival

Athlone is set for an early autumnal economic boost with large numbers set to descend on the town for the two day Shannon Feastival on September 8 and 9.

Highlighting the best of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, the Athlone Shannon Feastival promises to be a feast for foodies and families alike with an action-packed and busy programme of events planned for the whole weekend.

The Feastival’s official launch event of takes place on Saturday September 8th at 4pm with traditional Guinness and Oysters served at Sean’s Bar to the cool tunes of jazz on the riverside.

Highlights of the weekend also include the Radisson Blu Festival Marquee and Flogas Demo Kitchen, located under the walls of Athlone Castle; an Artisan Food Village; a weekend of Fashion, Music and Food Trails; a Viking BBQ Cook-Off; kids Chocolate Workshops and Cookery Demos; interactive Viking Settlement at The Strand; a Wellness Area; whiskey walking tours, tastings and a Viking whiskey cruise, as well as lots of river based fun, including raft and leisure boat races on the River Shannon and flyboarding displays

On Saturday, September 8, stroll down to the town bridge and East Quay where the Heritage Boat Association will be displaying up to 20 of their spectacular vessels. Experience what life with the Vikings was like by exploring the medieval tent village which will have stalls featuring weapon making embroidery and more.

Children will be in heaven with the chocolate painting workshops by award winning An Olivia Chocolate at the Radisson Blu Festival Marquee from 11am. Adults can raise a glass at the Midlands Whiskey Experience local whiskey and chocolate tasting event in the Malt House from 5pm.

On Sunday, September 9, local crews battle it out to be crowned ‘Champions of The Shannon’ in the Leisure Boat Rowing Races. Professional flyboarders take centre stage at 4pm as they hover over the river performing a variety of amazing stunts and tricks.

The Flogas Demo Kitchen hosts a series of foodie talks, cooking demos and tasty treats all day, and the Massage and Wellness tent is the perfect location for a short spell of R&R. At 6pm Viking Mike casts off and sets sail for a Viking Whiskey Cruise hosted by Midlands Whiskey Tours.

Restaurants participating in the Feastival Food Trail all weekend include The Fatted Calf, Kin Khao, Thyme, Smoke BBQ, The Corner House Bistro, Fine Wine & Food Company, La Cucina Di Angelo, The Radisson Blu Hotel and Sheraton Athlone Hotel, with more to be announced.

Step into the season in style with the latest fashions on display on the Feastival Fashion Trail with Burgess Department Store, Athlone Town Centre, Kadee Bridal, Lusana Shoe Boutique and Golden Island Shopping Centre.

Meander the Music Trail around Athlone’s pubs featuring sessions at Sean’s Bar, The Snug, The Castle Inn, The Fiddler’s Bar, The Malt House, The Sheraton Athlone Hotel Bar, The Quayside Bar at The Radisson Blu Hotel, The Prince Bar and The Waterfront Bar in the Hodson Bay Hotel.

The Artisan Food Village will showcase the best of locally produced food from producers including Kilbeggan Chocolate, Tara Jams, Wild Irish Foragers, KO Kombucha, Quarrymount Farm, Durrow Mills, Behan’s Fruit & Veg, and more to be announced.
