Mayo have to go away and dream it all up again

image preview

It was always going to be a game where everything had to go right for Mayo, or at least 90 per cent right. On Saturday they fell well short of that.

The team that played the best on the day won the prize

It was the first time since 1951 that we entered an All-Ireland final as favourites. Every Mayo person, myself included, genuinely felt this was our time.

Tyrone goals kill off Mayo’s All Ireland dream

This one will sting, more so than the other recent defeats in the concrete caldron on Jones Road on the biggest day of all.

Planning to get as much as possible right to deliver on the day

Nobody knows better than Mayo supporters that anything can happen once the ball is thrown in on All Ireland Senior Final day; two own goals in the first half, the ball bouncing off the ground and spinning up and over the bar, our most important player sent off after playing a minimal part in a mass brawl - all things Mayo fans can remember vividly.

The role of goalkeeper in Gaelic football has changed dramatically over the past few years - where once a good shot stopper and a guy who could launch the ball 50 yards down the field were the prerequisite skills for the position, now the position has changed into something much different - with footballing ability, precision passing as important a the ability to read the tactical plan of the opposition vital to the role.

All or nothing for Mayo on Sunday

What a difference a week makes. The Jekyll and Hyde side of Mayo football was never so evident as in their last three performances. Mayo put in a real gutsy performance against Tyrone in sun-drenched Healy Park Omagh last weekend to boost our chances of survival in the top flight. I wondered was it the same team that played Cavan the previous week. The football wasn't brilliant but this was all about the result. Mayo will probably still have to beat Donegal on Sunday to guarantee safety, as a confident Cavan will surely beat a demoralised Roscommon.

When word filtered through that Cavan had drawn with Kerry at half time in this encounter, the permutations and combinations of results that would be needed for Mayo to stay up in division one if they couldn’t come home from Omagh with win under their belts were being worked out by the supporters. But come full time in this one Mayo had put their destiny back in their own hands, thanks to Kevin McLoughlin’s brilliant winning score.
