The Connacht Gold Super and Premier cups get moving this weekend, with 16 games in both competitions down for decision over Saturday and Sunday. In the Super Cup there are just two all division ties with the meeting of Super League sides Manulla and Ballyglass in Carramore, and Claremorris and Westport United two of the stand-out ties of the round.

Celtic move into top spot

Manulla crashed to a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Claremorris last Sunday afternoon in Carramore, with Dean Roddy chipping in with five goals along with an effort from Simon Butler. It was plain sailing for the south Mayo men at the short whistle with a 4-1 cushion to rest on, with the sole Manulla response coming from Gerry Canavan. Canavan and Matthew Nolan added second half goals for Tom Healy’s troops, but Claremorris were already half-way home.

Goals galore light up the league

Claremorris bounced back from their crushing defeat at the hands of Ballyglass last weekend, with a stunning 6-4 win over Iorras Aontaithe. Goals certainly will not be a problem for the south Mayo men this season, as they produced a sparkling display on Sunday afternoon with last season’s Premier A top goalscorer Dean Roddy opening his Super League account with four goals. Hubert Kowalski and Simon Butler also fired home for Mark Peters' troops, in a game where they led 4-1 at the short whistle. In another game with a bagful of goals on Sunday, Ballina Town recorded a comprehensive 9-0 win over north Mayo neighbours Conn Rangers. It was the ultimate performance by Ballina with Keith Duffy grabbing four goals in a man of the match display. Brendan Lavelle chipped in with two along with efforts from Aidan O’Hora, Conor Quinn and former Castlebar Celtic frontman Paul Fitzpatrick.

Westport United move one step closer to the title

Westport United maintained their four point cushion at the weekend thanks to a facile 7-1 away win over relegated Straide and Foxford Utd. Both Mark McNally and Jamie Fallon bagged braces along with efforts from Pat Fitzgerald and Dave Cameron and an unfortunate own goal. It was plain sailing for the Covies throughout who had built up a comfortable 5-0 interval advantage.

United move closer to the title

Westport Utd went one step closer towards retaining the league title on Sunday afternoon at a rain-swept Ballyglass where they recorded a comprehensive 5-2 win. Considering that Ballyglass went 1-0 up in the 13th minute and were also reduced to 10 men as referee Damien McGrath flashed red to Danny Scahill, Westport United showed great composure to grind out a result away from home.

Westport United put Celtic to the sword

With Mayo playing against the Sky Blues on Saturday night there was a somewhat congested Mayo League card on Sunday afternoon. Westport Utd recorded a facile 6-0 win at home to their former fierce rivals Castlebar Celtic on Sunday morning. Dave Hoban fired home four goals in a stunning display, as well as efforts by Phil Keegan and Darren Browne in a superb display by the Covies. Ballina Town were made work for their three points at home to Conn Rangers. A first half Brendan Lavelle strike ultimately proved the difference in a closely fought affair.
