Family feud fine goes to poor box

A Mullingar man who pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour during a family feud incident has paid €400 to the Church of Ireland poor fund.

Thomas Dinnegan of 143 Raithin had been told two weeks earlier to make the charitable donation but when he appeared at the recent sitting of Mullingar District Court, he told Judge Patrick Clyne he didn’t have the €1,000 he was ordered to pay.

He also said his father, who’d been mentioned in another case he was involved with, wouldn’t give him the money either.

However, he brought €400 to court.

The incident occurred in Grange in May 2008.

Judge Clyne said he’d had an application from the church next door for their poor fund.

“I’ve given a lot to St Vincent de Paul,” he said. “And the other side have asked me for a bit of help.”

He said the rector was calling around after court to give him tea. “That’s how I got asked.”
