O’Donnellan & Joyce recorded more than €7 million in property sales in their "Wild Atlantic Way" auction on Friday.
Described as one of the "most remarkable property auctions" in recent years, Colm O’Donnellan, auctioneer, said: “It was an incredible auction with a number of properties achieving prices well in excess of anticipation and others where buyers were acquiring exceptional value.”
3 FRENCHVILLE, CLADDAGH, GALWAY
The auction commenced with the sale of a property at 3 Frenchville in the Claddagh with a bid opening at €370,000, increasing in increments of €5,000 up to €450,000. Just when the sale looked like it was coming to a conclusion, a fresh bidder entered via the phone until the auction hammer fell at a record price of €590,000 to a tumultuous applause from the capacity crowd.
LISDONAGH COTTAGE, LARGAN, HEADFORD, CO GALWAY
The second lot for sale was a property known as Lisdonagh Cottage near Shrule in Co Galway. The property, which belonged to the Australian actress Anne Charleston, who played the part of Madge Bishop in the well-known soap “Neighbours”, commenced with bids at €60,000, went up in increments of €2,000 and was sold at €92,000.
111 UPPER NEWCASTLE ROAD, GALWAY
This four-bed detached property located directly adjacent to NUIG contained a substantial site. Bidding opened at €340,000 and three individuals chased the property until it was sold at €360,000.
6 SNIPE LAWN, NEWCASTLE, GALWAY
A house at 6 Snipe Lawn, Newcastle, Galway, followed. Comprising a four-bed detached house located in small cluster of detached homes overlooking a green area, the property attracted five parties with bidding opening at €330,000 and was sold for €370,000.
2 WALSH’S TERRACE WOODQUAY, GALWAY
NO 2 Walsh’s Terrace, Woodquay comprised a four-bedroom mid-terraced house, described by the auctioneers as the “perfect city residence”. Bidding starting at €380,000 and was sold for €400,000.
57 DUN AENGUS, DOCK STREET, GALWAY
NO 57 Dun Aengus, a spacious three-bedroom townhouse with a car parking space and views overlooking Galway docks, had two interested parties and was sold for €250,000.
4 ST ANNE’S DANGAN, GALWAY
NO 4 St Anne’s, Dangan, a four-bed mid-terraced house, attracted two parties with bidding openingat €200,000. Atter 10 minutes with bidders interchanging, the house was sold for €263,000.
10 GRATTAN PARK, GRATTAN ROAD, SALTHILL, GALWAY
NO 10 Grattan Park, comprising a substantial detached house in need of some modernisation, and situated facing onto Salthill Promenade, attracted an opening €450,000. Two bidders chased the property intensely until the property was knocked down at €590,000.
LOHAN’S’ BAR & RESTAURANT, 232 – 234 UPPER SALTHILL ROAD, GALWAY
The highlight of the afternoon’s auction was Lohan’s Bar & Restaurant, Salthill, Galway. Referred to by Colm O’Donnellan as a “Galway institution situated in Salthill’s Golden Mile”, the property, which comprises a large licensed premises with basement and five apartments overhead, attracted exceptional interest. Bidding commenced at €1 million and increased in increments of €50,000 in a tense auction room. Just when it was coming to an end at €1.4m a fresh bidder brought it up to €1,650,000. The auctioneer’s hammer fell with a roar from the large crowd who were there to support the purchasers.
Colm O’Donnellan said a substantial amount of properties sold on the day, with a large number achieving exceptional prices.

Land of approximately 5.26 acres at Cully, Charlestown, Co Sligo sold for €30,000.
DRUM, KNOCK, CO MAYO
Land of approximately 1.04 acres located just off the N17 at Drum, Knock, Co Mayo, sold for €31,000.
THE SQUARE, TUAM, CO GALWAY
A three storey building with imposing façade and many original features located at The Square, just off Vicar Street in Tuam, Co Galway, sold for €101,000.
50 GLENINA HEIGHTS, DUBLIN ROAD, GALWAY
Superb detached residence at 50 Glenina Heights, adjacent to Bon Secour private hospital and GMIT sold for €237,000.
MAIN STREET, BALLYGAR, CO. GALWAY
Comprising a mix of commercial and residential property, previously used as a butcher’s shop at Main Street, Ballygar sold for €50,000.
37 CUAN NA COILLE, FORT LORENZO, GALWAY
Located at the top of Taylor’s Hill Road, an impressive three-bed duplex property at No 37 Cuan Na Coille, Fort Lorenzo, sold for €160,000.
ROSSAUN AUGHAVAS, CO LEITRIM
Located in a rural setting, a four bed semi-detached house, constructed in the 1920s at Rossaun, Aughavas, Co Leitrim, sold for €21,500.
APARTMENTS 17 AND 24 TEMPLE JARLATH, TUAM
Two modern second floor apartments of approximately 630 sq ft at 17 and 24 Temple Jarlath, Tuam, sold for €60,000 each.
