COLUM MNCANN, the Irish author of such acclaimed works as Let The Great World Spin and TransAtlantic, will be in Galway this week to read from his new novel, Thirteen Ways Of Looking.

An Evening with Colum McCann, organised by the Cúirt International Festival of Literature in association with An Taibhdhearc, takes place on Friday October 9 at 8pm in the Middle Street theatre.

Thirteen Ways Of Looking is the American based author's first short story collection in more than a decade, he explores themes of chance and the consequences of even the smallest moments - a retired judge reflects on his life’s work one morning, unaware it will be his last; a mother discovers her son has gone missing while swimming off the coast near their home; an elderly nun catches a snippet of a news report in which it is revealed that the man who once kidnapped and brutalized her is alive; and a writer constructs a story about a marine in Afghanistan calling home on New Year’s Eve.

The book has been praised by Kirkus Reviews as a "superbly crafted and deeply moving collection of fiction", while Publishers Weekly said "these four works prove McCann a master with a poet’s ear, a psychologist’s understanding, and a humanitarian’s conscience.”

Colum McCann is the author of six novels and three collections of stories. Born and raised in Dublin, he has been the recipient of the National Book Award, the International Dublin Impac Prize, and an Oscar nomination. His work has been published in more than 35 languages. Thirteen Ways Of Looking has already received a Pushcart Prize and selection in the Best American Short Stories 2015.

Tickets are €15/12 through An Taibhdhearc on 091 - 562024 or [email protected].
