Harlem Gospel Choir to play Galway in November

THE LEGENDARY Harlem Gospel Choir returns to Ireland in November for a nationwide tour which will take in Galway.

The choir was formed in 1988 and made its debut at New York’s Cotton Club that same year. Its founer is Allen Bailey who has worked in the entertainment industry since the 1970s, including with sould music icon James Brown.

Drawing its members from various black churches in the Harlem area, the group performs Christian song as well as soul and pop orientated material. It also seeks to encourage a better understanding of African/American culture.

The choir became internationally known after appearing on U2’s Rattle an Hum album performing a gospel version of ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’.

Since then the Harlem Gospel Choir has performed alongside Diana Ross, Gorillaz, and Andre Rieu. They have performed for two US presidents (Obama and Carter ), Nelson Mandela, two Popes (Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI ) and have recorded with Keith Richards and The Chieftains.
