A festival of classical music for February

ARGENTINEAN GUITARIST Ariel Hernandez and Irish pianist Isabel O’Connell will perform at the Galway Music Residency’s debut festival weekend this month.

The festival takes place in NUI Galway’s Aula Maxima from Wednesday February 27 to Friday March 1. It marks the residency’s 10th birthday and will see acclaimed performers in concert, alongside the great ConTempo Quartet.

Award winning pianist Isabelle O’Connell opens the festival on February 27, with ConTempo, including a special world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Dr Karen Power. Irish accordionist Dermot Dunne and Ariel Hernandez play on February 28. The final concert on March 1 sees ConTempo and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet perform Mendelssohn’s Octet in E Flat Major.

There will also be a retrospective exhibition of archival materials; three lunchtime events; a composition discussion with Jane O’Leary and Karen Power; a cello and voice concert with Naoimi Berrill; a poetry reading by Kevin O’Shea, featuring ConTempo; and workshops with Isabelle O’Connell, Karen Power, and Dermot Dunne and Ariel Hernandez.
