Gentle, rebellious punk from John Nee

Little John Nee

The Art of Gentle Punk is Little John Nee’s latest act of quiet rebellion.

The well-known Galway storyteller will appear at the Mick lally Theatre, on Druid Lane, for three nights, from Wednesday, January 21.

Part theatre, part concert, part beautifully unclassifiable dream, The Art of Gentle Punk invites audiences to immerse themselves in a world of music, storytelling and subtle madness.

Nee says it is a show for anyone who has ever felt drawn to linger in the shade of old trees, to pause at an odd corner of a field, or to laugh defiantly in strange, dark times

“As you pass along a country road in your motor car or on an omnibus, have you ever felt drawn to stop and spend time in an odd corner of a field?” he asks. “Have you ever felt a hankering to linger in the shades of old trees? In these strange dark days have your lungs longed to laugh in rebellion?”

If so, meet Nee here. He will bring you to a place where oddness lights the way, where love, like rain, washes the pain from your bones.

For more than four decades, Little John Nee has created singular works that defy genre and expectation.

His performances dance between worlds, blending clown, lyrical monologue, original song and quiet anarchy into something unmistakably his own. Rooted in tradition, yet wildly imaginative, his work carries echoes of vaudeville, punk, folk theatre, and magical realism, often all within the same moment.

In 2016, Little John Nee was elected to Aosdána, recognising artists who have made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland.

Tender, funny and quietly radical, The Art of Gentle Punk is an invitation to slow down, to lean into oddness, and to rediscover joy as an act of resistance this year.
