Derelict Ballinasloe

Galway historian Barry Lally will launch an exhibition focusing on ideas of dereliction for Culture Night 2023 tomorrow at 7.30pm at Ballinasloe’s Town Band Hall.

Now in its 13th year, Ballinasloe Culture Night will showcase DERELICT, a multi-media exhibition by artist collective Group 8, from noon on Friday, September 22 and 1.30pm on Saturday, September 23.

The Dunlo Hill venue will feature writing, paintings, textiles, photography, ceramics, mixed media, and sculpture focusing on the idea of dereliction, its concrete manifestation in our environment as well as its symbolism and meaning.

Group 8 has expanded over the years to now include ten visual artists and two writers. These are: visual artists Joyce Little, Lilly Kelly, Grellan Ganly, and Úna Spain; sculptor Tommy Campbell; painters John Soden and Fiona Moore; ceramicists Walter Coughlan and AUN Bridal’s Amy Uí Neachtain; textile designer Fiona Ormsby; and writers Nuala O’Connor and Zara Little-Campbell.

Group 8 is a non-profit, professional arts group which emerged in Ballinasloe to foster awareness, imagination and co-operative learning between artists and the community. Admission to the Culture Night event is free, in partnership with the Arts Council and Galway County Council.

Fiona Ormsby will run a felting workshop for adults, and children over 10, on Saturday, September 22, from 1.30pm. Limited places can be booked at the Friday evening exhibition.
