Many hands make light work
By Kernan Andrews
A TOTAL of 32 strings, 16 hands, and eight musicians will combine to perform the music of Mendelssohn when ConTempo and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet play The Hotel Meyrick on Monday April 20 at 8pm.
For this show, three string octets will be performed. Mendelssohn’s Octet in E flat major, Op 20 is regarded as his first early masterpiece, which he wrote at 16 years of age.
Max Bruch’s Octet in B flat major, Op posth, was written towards the end of his life, and although penned as late as 1919, it is still very much influenced by an earlier, romantic era. L’apparenza Sensibile by Italian composer Michele Dall’Ongaro, was written and premiered in 2008.
Tickets are €20/16/6 and are available form Opus II, St Augustine Street, or from the Music for Galway office on 091 - 705962. The next concert is Alberto Nosè and Quartetto di Venezia in The Ardilaun on April 30.
