London-Irish guitar wizard @ The Crane

“Probably the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain,” is how Acoustic Guitar magazine has described London-Irish axeman Clive Carroll.
Clive - whose guitar playing style shows the influence of John Renbourne and Tony Emmanuel, with a distinct Irish flavour - plays The Crane Bar, Sea Road, on Wednesday April 15 at 9pm.
Born in 1975 into a musical family, Clive’s father made him his first banjo in 1977 and a few years later he was playing in the family band. At nine he started to play the guitar and a few years later he joined a soul group and several orchestras.
In 1998, he gained a first class honours degree in composition and guitar from Trinity College, London and the university also awarded him a prize to record Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Trinity orchestra.
In 1998 John Renbourn encouraged Clive to record a solo album. The result was the acclaimed Sixth Sense (2000). In 2004 Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel invited Clive to join him on a tour of Australia. Since then he has continued to play shows with Emmanuel and Renbourn.
In 2005 he collaborated with Renbourn on the soundtrack for Driving Lessons, which starred Julie Walters. November 2008 saw the release of Clive’s third solo album, Life In Colour.
