O’Rourke welcomes start of flood works at Assumption Road

Local Fianna Fáil councillor, Aengus O’Rourke, has welcomed the start of much needed flood works at Assumption Road.

“The long back lane that runs behind Assumption Road, Tormey Villas, St Kieran’s Community Centre and the new housing estate Esker Park has been dogged with flooding issues for the past number of years.

“There have been two low lying areas that have persistently caused the problem. In 2020, I secured funding from Westmeath County Council to have works carried out to alleviate one of the flood spots near the Esker Park end of the lane and to that end, that work has certainly helped the situation at that location.

“This year I secured the necessary funding to address the second and last problematic location on the lane, to the rear of St Kieran’s Community Centre.

“I am delighted to say that the work on the ground commenced on Monday of this week and will take approximately two weeks to complete.

“Along with this work, I have also organised for works to be conducted at the St Kieran’s car park to improve the layout for parking. However, I have since asked the engineers to draw up a more substantial refurbishment plan for the entirety of this particular car park facility. This is a very busy location and it requires parking and disability parking to be enhanced.

“I would be hopeful that this work will be completed before the end of this year,” Cllr O’Rourke
