Poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin has been announced as the inaugural recipient of the John Broderick writer’s residency by Westmeath County Council in partnership with the Arts Council.

Spring Awakening in Castlebar

This pub was one of Salthill’s landmarks for over a century. It was a post office originally until Joe Crehan from Ballinasloe bought it at the end of the 19th century and converted it into a pub, grocery, and guest house. The name Ballinasloe House was quickly shortened in Salthill to ‘The Bal’. At the time Salthill village ran from here to Seapoint with a few houses further west.

“A great wave of salty, sustaining literary fare” was how guest speaker Vincent Woods vividly described the joys of Cúirt at the launch of this year’s programme, at the House Hotel on Tuesday evening. The venue was thronged as Galway’s readers and writers turned out in force for the occasion.

Westmeath County Council, in partnership with the Arts Council, has invited writers from across all genres to apply to become the inaugural John Broderick writer in residence, based in Athlone.
