Getting rid of the troublesome women

One of the remedies in dealing with overcrowding, and rebellious behaviour from frustrated and angry women in the workhouses during the famine years, was assisted emigration. This was done on a massive scale. Between 1848 and 1850, 4,175 women were sent direct from the workhouse system to Australia. This was in addition to the thousands already sent away assisted by landlords and other schemes to clear the land of unproductive tenants. The only cost to the individual Poor Law unions was for new clothes, and travel expenses to Plymouth, from where the girls embarked to the colony. 

Judge claims €40k in expenses

However as quick as you could say travel expenses, McLoughlin replied: “You have no mandate to implement a household tax, nor to rob the poor to help the rich. If you had any principles you would resign from the Labour Party!”

There were heated scenes this week in the council chamber at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. Independent Cathaoirleach Councillor Michael Burke was forced to call time on Independent councillor Frank Durcan a number of times after Cllr Durcan refused to stop speaking despite repeatedly being told by the Cathaoirleach he had gone over his allotted time.

•The annual Salthill-Knocknacarra Juvenile Hurling table quiz takes place in Sheridan’s bar, Knocknacarra on March 25 at 8pm. Tables of four cost €40 with prizes for first, second and third places. There will be a raffle on the night and finger food will be provided. All monies will go directly to the Salthill Knocknacarra juvenile hurling fund to assist with travel expenses, the provision of team gear, and the general running of the juvenile hurling club.
