Junior Open Week

Number three seed, Andrew Harte, was the impressive winner of this year’s Senior Open Week singles which was sponsored by TigerTurf Tennis Court Construction. Only Eoghan O’Connor was able to take a set from Andrew as he went on to defeat Brian Murphy, Tommy Rochford (seed 2) and Simon Clarke (seed 1) to take the men’s title.

The recent glorious weather has been encouraging people to play a lot of tennis and this has contributed to large entry for this year’s senior open week tournament which is again kindly sponsored by TigerTurf UK and Tennis Court Construction Ireland.

•The Galway Lawn Tennis Club hosts an open day on Saturday (June 26) from 12 noon to 5pm. Newcomers can sample the range of facilities available at the Threadneedle Road club, including trying out tennis, squash, and badminton with coaches available for all three sports. The club also offers an extensive range of facilities, including a sauna/steam room, personal training, indoor bowls, pool and table tennis, aerobics, chess, golf outings, and salsa and dance classes. Special membership rates are available on the day. Visitors are asked to bring a pair of runners.

The annual City of Galway Championships, which remain one of the most popular in Ireland, produced some sparkling performances from the locals, as well as top performances from Alan McCormack (Sligo) and Rob Johnston (Ballinasloe) who both made the singles and doubles finals.

Representatives of 24 different sports were in attendance in the council atrium on Monday to help launch “Destination Sport - Mullingar”, a week long celebration of sport planned for June 12-20 around the town.

Kilkenny Table Tennis Club is seeking members. The club provides recreational and competitive table tennis with competitions in the Midland Starball League.
