CLADDAGH BORN actor Aidan Dooley, who has enjoyed international acclaim and success with his show Antartic Explorer, about the life of Tom Crean, will launch his new book, Travels with Tom Crean, tomorrow.

The loss of the PS Connaught, October 8 1860, launched to reverse the sliding fortunes of the J Orwell Lever’s Galway Line, was a severe blow to the company. Although the local press tried to make the most of the fact that of the 591 people on board, not one life was lost, the bad publicity soured the public towards the Galway Line, which was also in financial trouble.

This photograph of the turf market at the Claddagh, near Wolfe Tone Bridge, was taken by the journalist Lillian Bland in 1908. This market used to take place regularly as farmers, mostly from the Barna/Furbo area, sometimes even Spiddal, would bring their cartloads of beautifully stacked turf to town. They were hoping to barter or sell their produce and then do their shopping in town. They often carried loads of hay, sometimes loose, sometimes tied, and large cans of milk, also for sale. There was a weighbridge on the other side of the cottages in our photograph which was often used in these transactions.

The board of Gnó Mhaigh Eo has appointed four new board members in recent months.  Earlier this year, Colleen McMahon of Rua, Castlebar, and Caroline Price of Oileán Éadaigh – West Mayo Brewery, joined the board of directors, bringing with them their knowledge and first-hand experience of working in business in Mayo. Rua was the recipient of Gnó Mhaigh Eo’s Gradam Gnó – Business with Irish Award last year, and West Mayo Brewery was one of the other companies on the shortlist for the award.
