Galway is set for one of its most remarkable weekends in living memory as the countdown continues to Saturday’s spectacular opening ceremony to Galway 2020. Thousands are expected to flock to the city to attend the event on Saturday afternoon — among them President Michael D Higgins and European Commissioner Phil Hogan who will officially pass the honour to the city.

UACHTARÁN NA hÉireann, Michael D Higgins, will officially open Galway 2020 at the European Capital of Culture's opening ceremony, which takes place this Saturday in South Park, the Claddagh.

Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture has begun this week with a series of events throughout the county, which will culminate in a spectacular, fire-lit Opening Ceremony at South Park in Galway City on Saturday 8 February.
