We turn ten today — thanks for letting us serve you

Yeas can go by in a flash and so it has been — it is a decade this week since the Mayo Advertiser first arrived on your doorstep. Being a Mayo native myself and continuing the sterling work what the Galway Advertiser had achieved in Galway since its foundation in 1970, it was with great excitement that we commenced publishing the Mayo Advertiser in October 2006.

Galway’s sandwich renaissance

image preview

We are a nation of sandwich eaters. Every cafe, counter, and hatch does its own variation, with ingredients ranging from withered lettuce to flash fried steak, from slathered 'spread' to flavourful aioli. A lot of people consider a sandwich to be a simple construct of a sliver of processed meat or a square of processed cheese between two pieces of white sliced pan, but they are wrong. They think that a sandwich is just a sandwich. Sadly, this tragic, flaccid, excuse for a meal is a lunchtime staple for too many who do not know the magic of a lovingly made 'buttie'. Let's face it, no truly good sandwich is ever going to win any awards in the health stakes, but then if you are looking for a low carb, paleo option you can have a salad.

Giving children access to culture on our doorstep

One of my favourite Baboró memories is a surprise flash-mob performed by 16 children to “Thriller” in Seapoint during the Silent Disco in 2012. The ever persuasive Teenagh Cunningham and Lali Morris convinced my husband, Kenneth Kennedy, and I, that this was exactly what Baboró needed to round off the festival. So having only two sons ourselves, we cajoled friends and relations to lend us their children to make up a troop of monsters, vampires, ghastly elves and ghouls to take to the floor and entertain the masses. Even now, I’m not sure how we were talked into it, but seeing these kids, many of whom had never danced or performed before, come alive as performers, proved just how essential the creative arts are to young minds and lives. Baboró, a fantastic and fun festival for and about children, encourages creative thinking and provides access to the arts for children regardless of any economic, social, cultural status. This is why Galway Water and Clada Group has been delighted to be involved with the Culture for Schools programme with Baboró since 2014.

Time for Mayo to find that winning formula

image preview

After Brendan Maher lifted the Liam McCarthy Cup high over his head in the Hogan Stand a fortnight ago, he mentioned in his speech that it had been "six long years" for Tipperary waiting for this day. Six years may be a long time in Tipperary, but it was 38 years for Mayo to reach an All Ireland final from the last time they won it in 1951 to their next dance with the girls at the end of the summer in 1989. That particular dance saw Cork go home with girls and since then Mayo have gone back to the same dance hall on six more occasions only to leave by themselves at the end of the night when the jackets were being collected from the cloakroom.
