Galway secures three Seanad seats, but could win more

Three Galwegians have secured seats in the Seanad Éireann, with victories for Alice Mary Higgins, Sinn Féin's Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and Independent Ronán Mullen. However, with the count ongoing, more could join them.

New agricultural working group set up

Mayo County Council has set up a new agricultural working group of 13 people to deal with agricultural issues in the county including, to provide a representative voice for farmers in Mayo in relation to national and European agricultural policy, to ensure that farmers are aware of opportunities to diversify in order to ensure viability in the future, and to review products produced by farmers in Mayo to ensure future viability.

Councillors still unhappy with changes in management roles in the council

The organisational structure of the senior management of Mayo County Council was raised once again this week by the elected members of the council at their April meeting. Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly questioned what would happen once the current director of services, Paddy Mahon, left the organisation to take up the role as the chief executive of Longford County Council in the near future. Cllr Munnelly said he hoped that each of the four municipal districts would retain a director of services over each area. This view was backed up by councillors of every political hue in the chamber, with Independent councillor Seamus Weir proposing a motion that each municipal district retain a director of services, which was seconded by Cllr Frank Durcan.

Slow progress on Westport House's future

Some progress has been made in relation to the future of Westport House, but it could be a number of months before the historic house and estate's future is known. Independent councillor Christy Hyland raised the issue of the house at the April meeting of Mayo County Council this week. Chief executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, responded to Cllr Hyland saying: "In relation to Westport House, a bit of progress is being made, I can't say any more."

Wild Atlantic Way needs special roads budget says councillor

A Fine Gael county councillor has called for a special heading to be included in the next roadworks scheme for Mayo to deal with road works and improvements on the Wild Atlantic Way in the county.

Public meeting to discuss South Galway’s flooding issues

A public meeting about the ongoing flooding problem in South Galway will take place in Sullivan’s Hotel Gort next Monday April 18. This winter again saw mass flooding in the area and numerous people having to be evacuated from their homes. There is still land under water and farmers are suffering the after-effects of trying to deal with ruined sodden land.

Councillors want representation on national flood taskforces

Following on from a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General that found a taskforce appointed to assess flood risks did not meet for six years before last July, the members of the Claremorris Municipal District have called for members of local authorities from the affected areas to be appointed to the taskforce.

Drama without the politics!

I must explain at the beginning of this column that I am compiling it before the Dáil meets on Wednesday, April 6. So I have no idea of what the outcome of that day will be but hopefully next week we will talk about it. I regret that my column must be in before the outcome of that Dáil meeting can be told. Let’s hope they come to some conclusion.
