Mayo hoteliers call for decisive action to support tourism

Hoteliers in Mayo have called on local candidates in the General Election to commit to decisive action in support of continued recovery in Irish tourism. ‘What the hell is going on?’ appears to be what the British Prime Minister Herbert H Asquith, is thinking as he disembarks at Dun Laoghaire on May 12 1916, almost three weeks after the Easter Rising. Following six days of intensive fighting, Dublin city centre was unrecogniseable. Practically all its main buildings were destroyed either by artillery fire or burnt out. The list of casualities was horrendous. One hundred and sixteen army dead, 368 wounded, and nine missing. Sixteen policemen died, and 29 wounded. And this at a time when Britain was fighting an appalling war in France, which seemed unending, and its mounting causalities were not only threatening his government’s survival, but had filled the British people with dread and alarm.

Galway People of the Year Award winners to be honoured in January

The Galway People of the Year Award winners 2015 will be honoured at a Gala Banquet and Presentation to be held in the Galway Bay Hotel on Saturday February 6. Compered by Keith Finnegan, the winners were nominated by members of the public for their work in a variety of fields which contributed to the betterment of the lives of people in their communities. The winners were introduced by the chair of the adjudication panel Mary Bennett and awards organiser Ollie Robinson to a large attendance of family and supporters.

Local hoteliers upbeat about 2016

Following a year of strong tourism growth, hotels and guesthouses in Galway are upbeat going into 2016, according to the latest quarterly barometer from the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF). Local hoteliers have benefitted from a 13 per cent increase in overseas visitors to Ireland over the last 12 months, including significant growth key markets such as North America (visitors up 13 per cent), Britain (up 11 per cent) and the rest of Europe (up 14 per cent).
