Gleeson Street to have pelican crossing

Athlone Town Council has decided that a pelican crossing is to be installed at Gleeson Street, to replace the temporary crossing that was in place during construction of the Athlone Towncentre and Sheraton Hotel.

Mayo walks continue to grow, but funding will be tight next year

Mayo County Walking Officer Anna Connor gave an in-depth presentation to the Planning and Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee of Mayo County Council. After outlining the steps being taken to turn Mayo into the walking capital of Ireland, Director of Services for the council Mr Joe Loftus told the members. “There is a difficult budget ahead which could have some implications for the walking strategy but I’m sure we can get through it.”

Pedestrian crossings cause concern for Castlebar councillors

The difference between controlled and uncontrolled pedestrian crossings caused a bit of controversy at Castlebar Town Council’s monthly meeting. Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne brought up the issue because of a report that was circulated to the members which outlined a number of pedestrian crossings which had been installed in the town. “In relation to pedestrian crossings, I don’t know where any of these are in the town. I can’t see them anywhere.”

Barnacouge/Killaturley Walking Group

A walk organised by the Barnacogue/Killaturley walking group will take place on Tuesday April 21 at 7.30pm. The walkers will meet at the Killaturley Shrine which is the second shrine on the Cullane Road coming from Swinford. This walking group has held a number of walks during the last few years and they have been very successful. Walking training

As part of the build up to the Mayo in Motion Walking Month in June the Mayo Walking Partnership is proposing to hold a course in basic walking leadership over three Monday evenings in May in Castlebar.

Mayo in Motion

Last year the Mayo Walking Partnership in association with Mayo Sports Partnership facilitated an initiative to promote walking as an enjoyable way towards a healthy and active lifestyle. Based on last year’s success they will once again be promoting walking during the month of June called Mayo in Motion Walking Month.

Walks around Charlestown

A number of walks have been organised locally in conjunction with Mayo in Motion Walking Month for June. The next walk will be held on Tuesday June 9 at 7.30pm. The meeting place is Callow Lake Car Park. All are welcome.
