€1.38 million for Mayo in Government Sports Grants Scheme

Funding for Mayo sporting clubs and organisations under the Government’s Sports Grants Scheme has been announced this week by Beverley Flynn TD, who has also urged disappointed clubs to contact her to begin the process of reapplying for next year.

Cuts in grants to hurt Mayo sporting organisations

Mayo clubs and sporting groups will be feeling the pinch of the economic downturn this year with the news that that Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism will not be providing any funding through the sports capital grant programme in 2009. In 2008 at total of 28 groups in Mayo shared in a pot of €1,380,500 in funding for projects which spanned from €2,000 to All Stars Boxing Club in Ballinrobe to €250,000 which was given to the Connacht Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland. In 2007 more than €2.5 million in grants was handed out around County Mayo.

The Achill Heinrich Böll cottage on Achill Island is a residency for writers, composers and artists. Applications are now being accepted for stays in the cottage during 2010.

Support for Ballina theatre needed

A number of national and international artists will be visiting Ballina this weekend to support the campaign for a new theatre for the town. Part funding of €4.3 million was allocated for the new theatre from the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism; Mayo County Council; and Ballina Town Council at the end of last year. However, in order to secure this funding, a further €500,000 must be raised in the local community by July 2009. A fundraising committee was set up earlier in the year to build on the good work already done by previous interest groups and a number of fundraising events have already taken place.

€2.65 m for Athlone and Mullingar projects

Westmeath local authorities are delighted to announce that grant aid funding of up to ?2.65 million towards the Athlone Art Gallery and the Mullingar Cycle Network has been secured through the BMW Gateways and Hubs ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Scheme.
