Local homeless charity Galway Simon Community is calling on people to take part in their Dip & Donate event this weekend to support those facing homelessness during a time when the charity say their services are critically needed now more than ever .Galway Simon’s annual Dip at Dawn event could not go ahead as planned this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Two psychology students, Margaret Brehony and Kathy O’Grady, drew attention to the fact that there were rough sleepers in Galway too.

Local homeless charity Galway Simon Community is calling on people in their local community to join them in marking the organisation’s 40 years in Galway. The charity is inviting past and present clients, volunteers, staff and supporters of the organisation to join them to mark their contribution in helping to prevent thousands of people from homelessness locally. The event, Marking 40 Years of Galway Simon, a culture evening of storytelling, music and art, will take place on Thursday 17th October at 7pm in The Ardilaun Hotel in Galway.

The Simon Communities launched their Closing the Door on Homelessness campaign this week. The charity, which is marking 50 years since its foundation in Ireland in 1969, has launched the campaign to tell the stories of people it has supported to close the door on homelessness. In the campaign, Simon Community clients will be sharing their experiences of the safety and security of closing their own front door behind them. In 2018, the Simon Communities around the country ‘closed the door’ for more than 2,400 men, women and children across Ireland, helping them move out of homelessness and into a secure home.

Over 160 people joined Galway Simon Community for their first ever Dip at Dawn event in Salthill last week. The event was organised on the longest day of the year as an act of solidarity with the almost 10,000 people in emergency accommodation across the country and the many more hidden homeless and in homeless services.
