Shell to Sea hopes for New Year fresh thinking

As a new year dawns Shell to Sea is hoping it will bring some fresh thinking and has urged both the Government and Shell to halt what they term the “ill-conceived” Corrib gas project until such time as the concerns of the local community have been adequately dealt with.

Harrington back behind bars

Shell to Sea protester Maura Harrington was sent back behind bars for a further 14 days for failing to pay fines relating to her imprisonment in March. At the March court sitting in Belmullet, where Harrington denied claims that she slapped a member of An Garda Síochána during a protest at Pullathomas Pier on June 11 2007, she was sentenced to 28 days in prison.

Jail and psychiatric assessment for Shell to Sea activist

Retired school principal and prolific Shell to Sea activist, Maura Harrington, Tullyaghanbawn, Geesala, Belmullet, was sentenced to 28 days in jail and recommended to undergo psychiatric assessment, by Judge Mary Devins at Belmullet District Court on Wednesday, after Harrington was convicted of a section two assault on retired garda Eamon Berry on June 11 2007 during a protest at Pullathomas Pier. The defendant, who was also bound to the peace for 12 months for a public offence on a different date, failed to sign the bond. Due to her contempt of court Harrington was sentenced to jail a further two days concurrent.

Imprisoned Harrington missed London conference

Imprisoned school teacher Maura Harrington who was invited to speak at an event in London arranged by a coalition of human rights organisations, was unable to do so because she was still detained in Mountjoy Prison. The event, which took place on Monday, was organised by the remember saro-wiwa coalition to highlight the Wiwa vs Shell trial.

Special court sittings for Shell protesters

During Belmullet District Court on Wednesday, Judge Conal Gibbons adjourned a number of cases which relate to recent protests against the Corrib Gas project, to special court sittings in July, September, and October.

Ministers due to meet Erris community groups last night

Last night (Thursday) an open meeting was due to take place between Government Ministers Eamon Ryan and Eamon Ó Cuív with community groups Pobal Chill Chomáin, Pobal Le Chéile, Rossport Solidarity Camp, Shell To Sea (Mayo), and members of the Erris community at Inver Community Hall.

Clashes expected in Belmullet this weekend as protestors threaten to remove fence

Following escalating tensions over the past few weeks between anti-Shell factions and IRMS security staff working at the Shell E&P pipeline landfall site at Glengad, further clashes are imminent this weekend after Shell to Sea are nationally and internationally endeavouring to drum up support for what they are calling a day of action, at 6pm on Saturday, May 9, to remove the fencing around the Glengad site.

Corrib protesters gear up for summer of unrest

Tensions in north Mayo have escalated once again with eight arrests over the weekend and one on Tuesday when a large number of protesters gathered for the summer Rossport Peace Camp. With the Solitaire due to arrive back in Mayo waters in the next month, the Rossport Solidarity Camp has taken up residence in Glengad in a bid to build up the resistance to Shell over the coming weeks and months. Mary Sweeney of the Rossport Solidarity Camp said: “Resistance in Mayo is building again. We’re expecting many waterborne activists from across Europe to arrive over the following weeks. The Solitaire will leave Irish waters once again with no pipeline laid.”

Arrests mount at Glengad while protester’s fishing boat sinks

There were eight people arrested at Glengad beach in north Mayo on public order charges yesterday (Thursday).
