At the start of this current league many Galway supporters believed this current crop of Galway footballers would be good enough to win promotion to division one.

It has been quite a while since any Galway senior football team won three league games on the trot. However, there is an opportunity to do just that this weekend when Galway take on Meath this Sunday in Navan (2pm) in round four of the NFL.

The Galway footballers will head up the motorway to Jones Road this Sunday morning to face Tipperary in the All-Ireland quarter-final at Croke Park [4pm], hoping to be the first senior football team from the county to taste success at the venue since 2001.

The footballers from Galway defeated Roscommon easily on Sunday afternoon in McHale Park in the Connacht final, winning by 3-16 to 0-14.

When we narrowly defeated Roscommon in the Connacht final in 1998 after a replay, it was a bit of luck that made the difference between two evenly matched sides.

There was a genuinely eerie feeling at McHale Park last Saturday evening around 8.30pm. Galway had just beaten the home side by 1-12 to 0-12 and large numbers of Mayo supporters just sat in the stand numbed and perplexed by what had happened.
