Volunteers in Portumna and Tuam have put their communities in the spotlight during a two-day judging visit for the IPB Pride of Place competition. Pride of Place adjudicators Tom Dowling and Peter Hynes visited Portumna on Monday before travelling to Tuam on Tuesday, where they met volunteers, community groups, young people and local organisations.

Galway County Council and the Irish Workhouse Centre have announced a comprehensive programme of events in the lead up to the 2026 National Famine Commemoration, taking place at the Irish Workhouse Centre on Sunday, 17 May. The Community Programme is created with support from the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.

More than €1.67 million has been awarded to seven towns and villages across County Galway that are working to strengthen local amenities, protect heritage and address vacancy.

Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Cllr James Charity, welcomed the recent funding allocation for Clifden and Portumna, noting that the investment would provide significant enhancement to both areas, but would also benefit the entire county.
