Mayor of Castlebar and Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere has congratulated the Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, for an outstanding 35 years representing the people of Mayo. Mr Kenny was elected to Dáil Éireann on 12 November 1975 when the first ever Mayo West by-election was held. Fine Gael party colleagues in Castlebar Town Council, Cllr Brendan Henaghan, Cllr Eugene McCormack, and Cllr Noreen Heston, also extended congratulations to Deputy Kenny.

The Fine Gael party in Castlebar has not made any deal with Fianna Fáil councillor Blackie Gavin to get him to support former town councillor Kevin Guthrie’s appointment to a vacant post on Mayo VEC, according to Cllr Ger Deere. The post, which was vacated by Fine Gael councillor Noreen Heston when she resigned from the VEC in March, was filled by former Mayor of Castlebar, Kevin Guthrie, on Tuesday night when he beat fellow nominee Tony Deffley by five votes to four in council chamber. “I can categorically deny that any deal has been done with Cllr Gavin in relation to him supporting Kevin Guthrie for the post in the VEC,” Cllr Deere said. “He made up his own mind in relation to it and thinks Kevin Guthrie is the best person for the position.”

The Castlebar Joint Policing Committee is to write to the operators of takeaway restaurants in the town to meet with them in relation to the number of incidents that occur outside them on weekend nights. Fine Gael councillor Noreen Heston raised the issue, asking Superintendent Willie Keaveney how much of his resources were taken up on weekend nights policing these areas. Supt Keaveney told the meeting that from 1am to 4am from Friday to Sunday night, he had to have almost all his officers in close vicinity to the areas they operate in, because when the night clubs start emptying out and people start to congregate in these areas the vast majority of assaults and incidents of anti social behaviour start occurring.

The Castlebar Joint Policing Committee was told this week that the head shops were always one step ahead of legislation, despite public concerns. Castlebar Mayor Cllr Michael Kilcoyne asked town engineer Sean Higgins what the current situation was in relation to proceedings taken by the council on the issue. Mr Higgins informed the meeting that the council was in the process of investigating the planning history of the two head shops in the town, and had sent a warning letter to one shop.

Fine Gael councillor Noreen Heston has resigned from Mayo VEC in order to focus on her work with local residents in the town. In her resignation letter she stressed that she wanted to concentrate on “my core responsibilities as a member of Castlebar Town Council and, especially, my work with residents’ associations”.

The long awaited refurbishment of Main Street in Castlebar will be underway shortly, the members of Castlebar Town Council were told last week at their monthly meeting. “We advertised for contractors in December and we have now gone through the notification period for those who were successful and those who weren’t,” town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting. “The contract was awarded to Kilcross Construction and was worth €950,000. We will be meeting with them next week to work out a programme of work for the project and my intention is that once this is worked out I will bring together the councillors, traders and the Chamber of Commerce as to the time span and the programme of work and how it will affect different areas.”
