€2 million boost for Mary Robinson Centre

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this week confirmed that the cabinet had approved €2 millon for the proposed Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina. The centre which will be built in Victoria House in Ballina, Mary Robinson’s birthplace on the banks of the River Moy, will be Ireland’s first Presidential Archive. Mayo County Council had provided an initial €1.5 million package to purchase the house and included the site next door and the construction of a new annex on the site

"I am pleased to advise that the Department of Social Protection has agreed to my request and will operate a clinic at the Health Centre on the Erris Road on Friday from 10.30am to 12.30pm to help with applications under the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme which is designed to provide financial assistance in the case of flooding where homes are damaged," she said.

Majority of microfinance loans went to businesses outside Dublin — Mulherin

Mayo Fine Gael TD, Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed the findings of a review of Microfinance Ireland (MFI) which has been published by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. MFI provides loans of up to €25,000 to businesses which employ 10 people or fewer and which are not able to access credit from traditional sources like banks. The report found that in its first two years of operations, MFI received 729 applications for loans, supported 743 jobs in 333 micro-enterprises, and approved loans valued at more than €5 million.
