A strong case to develop a state-of-the-art community centre in Islandeady was outlined to members of Castlebar Municipal District when they met at the existing centre for their May meeting on Wednesday last.

The Penny Dinners committee was a name given to a voluntary group who used to provide free dinners for 40 to 80 impoverished children four times per week in the late 1920s and early 1930s. In fact the title was a misnomer, in no sense were they penny dinners. The children could not afford to give a penny for them, nor could the committee provide a dinner for a penny. The funding for these meals came from the people of Galway and also from fundraising productions they put on, mostly in the Columban Hall.

The thematic for this year’s iteration of the festival will be related to 'Alternative Futures'. AATE will invite audiences to reflect on propositions/ opportunities for change and intervention in a world of uncertainty.

The buildings we see, running from the left, are Prospect Lodge; Corrig View; Elm View; Prairie House with the balcony, which was built 1855-1861 by Colman O’Donohoe who had obviously spent some time in America; Beachmount; Villa Marina, which had the sign Michael Horan, Grocer over the door; Sunnyside Lodge; Seapoint House; then a gap which led into Seapoint Terrace; and finally, the thatched building which was George Fallon’s Baths. The sign on his gable read Hot Baths and Bathing, No Refunds and his family operated the baths business at least from 1855 to 1894

An innovative renewable energy contract in Belmullet has secured a major national award for a Mayo-based mechanical and electrical engineering contracting firm. Sean Horan Ltd, founded 40 years ago, has just been awarded the Plumbing & Heating Magazine renewable project of the year award for 2017.
