Twenty Castlebar affordable houses lie empty due to subsidy withdrawal

There are 20 state of the art houses lying empty in a newly built Castlebar Town Council housing scheme because the Department of the Environment has withdrawn funding for affordable houses.

Castlebar Town Council withdraws part of McHale Park planning permission

Castlebar Town Council withdrew part of the planning permission for McHale Park at its monthly meeting last Thursday. The meeting, which was attended by a large number of the residents of McHale Road, but not by members of the Mayo County Board, saw a motion put forward by independent councillor Frank Durcan and seconded by fellow independent councillor and Mayor of the town Michael Kilcoyne passed by six votes to three in the chamber.

Meeting hears officials accused of “collusion” in McHale Park development

The McHale Park planning row will roll on to the end of October following a meeting of Castlebar Town Council on Tuesday night. The special meeting had been convened to consider a motion put forward by Independent Councillor Frank Durcan which called on the council to refuse the granting of planning permission for the retention of the TV broadcasting tower at the multi million euro development at the ground.

In association with Finbar Hoban Presents, three bands again will again provide the finest of music while helping to raise funds for CARI (Children At Risk In Ireland). Hosted by Karen Conway, Saturday October 3 at 9pm sees Mulroy's Bar Ritz as the venue for Castlebar's third Charity Rock Ball with Castlebar's Hot Rock, Mother Black Cap, and Galway's 21 Outs. Also on the night there will be a Guitar Hero Challenge and the second CARI Cream Cracker Charity Challenge. The current world record is three crackers (without liquid) in 14.45 seconds and the challengers are attempting to match this record while also seeing how many crackers they can eat in a minute.

Castlebar mayor condemns transfer of ambulance call centre to Tánaiste’s constituency

The Mayor of Castlebar hit out this week at the news that 12 jobs in the Ambulance Control Centre in Castlebar will be lost to a newly designed facility in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne told the Mayo Advertiser: “Now you are going to get put through to a control centre in Donegal who will then tell the ambulance drivers where the call is from, communication can break down at the best of times, and they are not going to know the geography of Mayo like a person from here would and incidents could happen. But it just so happens also that the Tánaiste can deliver some new jobs to her own constituency while the people of Mayo will be left to suffer.”

Workers to be balloted over hygiene standards in Mayo General

The non-nursing support staff at Mayo General hospital are to ballot over the coming week over possible industrial action over the falling standards of hygiene in the hospital. The workers are concerned about the standard of hygiene in the hospital and its decline over the past number of years. SIPTU official and Mayor of Castlebar, Cllr Michael Kilcoyne told the Mayo Advertiser that the staff concerns have become so grave they have been left with no choice but to ballot to raise the issue for the safety of all patients in the hospital.

Tributes paid to the late Cathal Duffy

The town of Castlebar was plunged into sadness at the news of the death of local businessman Cathal Duffy of Rathbawn Road who died at Mayo General Hospital following a short illness.
