Where has the time gone?

World Cup fever is well and truly upon us with games coming thick and fast and most of us struggling to keep the lids open for the late starts every night. Mayo football and the World Cup is something I relate to from my memories as a Mayo footballer. I made my championship debut for Mayo all the way back in 1994, the World Cup was on in the USA the same year. It is hard to believe 20 years could go by so fast. Mayo football was taking a bit of a bashing then on the back of Mayo’s humiliating defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland semi final by all of 20 points in 1993. As a new kid on the block I did not care about the World Cup, and I was oblivious to the thrashing I am sure Mayo football was taking from the entire country, because I had achieved a goal I set myself as a 16-year-old who failed to make a Mayo u16 team for the Ted Webb Cup. When I arrived home from Mayo u16 training in 1990 to tell my parents I had been dropped from the panel because I simply was not good enough I swore to them that day I would play for the Mayo senior team before I was 20.

You would be hard pressed to find better value for money

I managed to take in four of the five matches at McHale Park last weekend. The weather was particularly nice for football and I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the action. I am partial to giving the GAA at administrative level the odd short-arm tackle over the way they do business when it comes to entrance fees to matches. No such complaints last weekend and I have to applaud the fact that the County Board decided an entrance fee of €10 to be an appropriate rate on both days. This represents excellent value for money, even in these economically depressed times. However when you consider that €20 gave you access to five games I was disappointed that the crowds did not flood into the venue over the weekend.

Are you paying too much for school uniforms?

Mayo footballer Ronan McGarrity was on hand at the recent launch of the new Toymaster school uniform department in its Ballina Store on the Crossmolina Road. The local Mayo fans were delighted to have their autograph books and Mayo jerseys signed by one of the heros of the recent championship campaign.

New York, New York

The great summer GAA championship extravaganza is about to get underway. It starts next Sunday and will continue for 20 weeks as the football and hurling campaigns endeavour to enthrall the sporting public. From provincial to qualifier to the All-Ireland series, it promises to be a feast of exciting action all over the country as teams battle it out for the ultimate prize of winning the Sam Maguire in September. Mayo has the distinction of kicking off this year’s campaign when they play New York in the first round of the championship. Whether they will be involved at the business end of the competition is anyone’s guess at this stage? Having witnessed last Saturday’s result in Croke Park, where the complete outsiders Leinster turned in an incredible performance to beat their much fancied rivals Munster, who’s to say that a Mayo team couldn’t do something similar in this years championship? As you know the five Connacht counties play New York on a rota basis.
