Jobs announcement a major boost for Mayo

The announcement this week that 150 new jobs will be created in Castlebar over the next three years will be a major boost for the town and for An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The Taoiseach has come in for some serious criticism from a number of quarters recently in relation to his delivery of jobs and investment in his home town. The announcement by Northgate Information Solutions that it intends to create these new jobs will be seen as a significant success for Mr Kenny following the criticisms laid at him.

Boost for Mayo with announcement of 150 new jobs

There was a major boost for Mayo this morning (Wednesday, November 27) with the announcement of the creation of 150 new jobs by Northgate Information Solutions in Castlebar over a three year period. The jobs will focus on Northgate’s core services including IT and transactional services, as well as document management services and an extension to the health services already in place. The announcement was made during the conference on Partnership and Innovation hosted by the West/North West Hospitals Group and NUI Galway today.

The Mayo Sinn Féin Selection Convention held in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, on Sunday last resulted in four candidates being chosen to contest next year's local elections. Cllr Toireasa Ferris chaired the convention which selected Cllr Gerry Murray to contest the Claremorris area, Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh to contest the West Mayo area, Cllr Thérése Ruane to contest the Castlebar area, and John Sheahan to contest the Ballina area.

Castlebar FG picks candidates for selection convention

Last week the Castlebar branch of the Fine Gael party met to pick candidates to go forward for the selection convention ahead of next year’s local elections. The Castlebar branch selected sitting county councillors Cyril Burke and Eugene McCormack along with current Castlebar Town Council councillors Brendan Heneghan and Ger Deere. The four selected nominees all spoke to the meeting and will now go forward to the party’s Mayo convention next month.

12.5 per cent of commercial units in Mayo’s three big towns are vacant

According to a report released by GeoDirectory from GKM Economic Consultants one-eighth of all commercial properties in county Mayo was vacant in the third quarter of this year. The survey also broke down the rates in the three big towns in Mayo, Castlebar, Ballina and Westport. The county town came out on top of the list with 19.3 per cent of commercial premises recorded as vacant, with 18 per cent in Ballina and 11.3 per cent in Westport.

The Irish Cancer Society in Mayo launched its 2014 trek destinations with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The treks which will raise money for cancer research include exciting destinations such as the Himalayas, the Grand Canyon, and Mount Kilimanjaro.
