Nominations for the Local Elections on May 23 closed on Saturday.

Westport’s magnificent seven send them top

It’s not too often you see a team short of up to eight guys who could be considered starters run out five goal winners and score seven in a game, but then not many teams are Westport United. Last weekend there was no mercy shown by the Covies when they steamrolled Charlestown Athletic in the Sportspark, thanks to a four goal return from injury time in the first half until the ninth minute of the second half.

Westport put seven past Charlestown, while Celtic end S&F winning start

Even with eight regulars missing from their starting line-up, Westport United showed no mercy to Charlestown Athletic in the Sportspark on Sunday. No less than seven different Westport United players got on the score sheet in their 7-2 route of the east Mayo side. Westport struck four goals on the bounce from injury time in the first half until the 56th minute of the contest, to turn at 1-0 lead into a 5-0 lead and sap the fight out of a Charlestown Athletic team who up until that point had been doing their best to hang in with home-team.

Champions drop points at home

In a truncated round two of the Elverys Sports Super League where the games between Ballyheane and Westport United and Castlebar Celtic and Moy Villa were postponed the big news from the weekend was Straide and Foxford United's 2-0 win away to the champions Ballina Town in Belleek on Sunday afternoon. The newly promoted side who picked up a 3-2 win away to Manulla last weekend made it two wins from two so far this season with the goals coming from Conor Sherry and Stephen Wallace. The tangerine clad side will be looking to make it three wins from three next week when they host Castlebar Celtic on the banks of the Moy. On Saturday night another of the Super League new-boys Charlestown Athletic who earned a point against Ballyheane last weekend thanks to two late goals picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 win over Fahy Roves in Charlestown. Goals from Jacob Gawalkiewicz and Thomas Meehan put the east Mayo side into a 2-0 lead, before Fahy Rovers cut the gap back to a single goal after finding the net from the penalty spot. Next up for Charlestown Athletic is a trip to the Sportspark and a game against Westport United next Sunday afternoon.

New season kicked off in style

The big game of the opening weekend of the Mayo League Super League last weekend was the meeting of Westport United and Castlebar Celtic in the Sportspark only seven days after their Connacht Cup semi-final clash in Castlebar. The Covies came out on top this time around, despite going in trailing 1-0 at half time thanks to a Jason Hunt goal. But three second half strikes from Martin Geraghty and a Dave Hoban brace gave the hosts a 3-1 win.

A summer of drama and excitement starts here

This weekend 42 of the 43 teams taking part in the Mayo Football league will kick off their campaign for the new season. The odd team out being Ballyvary Blue Bombers who are part of the seven team League One this season. The big change this year in the league format is the return to 10 team divisions in the top three levels this season after a couple of years with eight team divisions.

Mayo League side bow out of EA Sports Cup

The Mayo League representative side made the short trip to Eamon Deacy Park in Terryland on Tuesday night for this first round EA Sports Cup tie. But unfortunately they came up short against the SSE Airtricity League side after holding them at bay for more than 75 minutes of the contest. Galway FC had been pushing for a goal all night, but Mayo League goalkeeper Gary Cunningham had been in fantastic form. When he was finally beaten it came from the boot of Marty Owens who fired home at the back post from close range after being set up by Jake Keegan. The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes before the end when Keegan riffled the ball past Cunningham from out on the right hand side after some neat footwork to create the space for the shot.

Back to the future with ten team divisions

The Mayo League announced late last week that they will be scrapping the eight-team divisions from the league, following a three-year experiment with the smaller divisions and moving back to ten-team divisions.

Ballina Town claim Super League title after super season

The 2013 Elvery’s Sports Super League title headed to north Mayo after a titanic battle that stretched right until the very last day of the season. Ballina Town wrapped it up with a 1-0 win away to Castlebar Celtic, while Ballyheane were held to a 2-2 draw by Westport United at home. Although the title deservedly went to Ballina Town, Ballyheane had a impressive return to the Super League finishing in second place and going the whole 14 game season unbeaten in the league, finishing up with seven wins and seven draws.
